What is "pedal tapping"?

Beitrag von bovist »

Jarl from MAFY/Sweden asked me for a special feature. There are Hammond afficionados who complained about a missing "pedal tapping" feature. I do not exactly know what that means - I think it's playing like the late Jimmy Smith (just hitting a pedal note slightly to obtain an attack effect while otherwise playing bass on left hand).

As a usual pedal is not velocity sensitive, I could think of a switch that cancels the fundamental bass frequency, just leaving the harmonics. Any sound examples out there?

Pedal tapping is as I know a special way of playing bass sounds of legendary Jimmy Smith.
As known he mostly plays " handbass " and parallel playing lower manual keys he only "hits"
ANY pedal key a little, so that the pedal generates no direct bass sound but a " scratching noise " .
In addition with the keyclick of handbass in lower manual this remembers little to the sound of a
plugged bassguitar.
I think to analyse this the best way is to hear and measure this signal at audio tracks on some
bass solo tunes of Jimmy Smith

I think your guess is right, Carsten.
Lefthand Bass player just push a specific note on
the bass pedal to enhance the groove...
Jimmy Smith was known for it.

The Hammond SK has a function where you can
a specific bass note assign to the
foot switch.
So you can use this playing technique without
needing a full bass pedal. Just hit the footswitch.
(see SK Manual page 79)

But that means you need another footswitch
connector ?

I think because in HAMMOND pedal you find 8 busbars connected to a resistance network
to generate the pedal sound 16´and 8´ it must happen that in minimum one of these keycontacts
will be somewhat closed a little. Even when no keycontact is closed when hitting the pedal key You
must not do it. But when any keycontact is closed a little there will be a little change in Tonewheel
pickup load for the common organ. I think we must regard in this case the tapering of whole organ
with the resistance wires.
As I remember Jimmy Smith taps not the same named keys in pedal played with left hand.
He taps permanent the same specific key in pedal.
So we must look at his left hand drawbar positions which busbars are involved.
The difficult aspect is that we don´t know which was his specific key in pedal.
The second difficulty is that we don´t know which busbar contacts close first very little when tapping.
The only way to find out is using audio track from a pedal solo of Jimmy Smith and regard
this on a spectrum analyzer

JS is not playing all the time the same note on the pedal. As far as I know, some Jazz organ players do so.

Have fun:

The only way to play on a Hammond B3 a " walking bass " is to use tip and heel

like Rhoda Scott does it - even barefoot !
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PB4MTN_oy6E

meanwhile she is 79 of age .......... but still on stage

Barbara Dennerlein play only tip - because she uses a sampled acoustic bass with SUSTAIN
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYP7Mxss3_U
so there is no need of playing tip and heel

When regarded Jimmy Smith we find that he plays both
manual bass on lower keys plus pedal bass at specific notes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NiIltwUudA

he never plays a walkingbass on pedal ! This walking line comes only from manual bass on lower
keyboard.
Cause he doubles certain notes with the pedal we hear this grooving style by really tip the pedal key or just
tapping it

was in der alten Oper in Frankfurt stattfand.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60ut7yIuCEY

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ra4kYAYCdeI
